Privacy Policy

Privacy should feel as calm as reading.

This Privacy Policy explains how Folio collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you use the app, website, and support channels.

01

No ad tracking

Folio is not built around advertising and we do not sell your personal information.

02

Private by default

Your library is private unless you choose to make parts of it public.

03

Your choices

You can manage your data in the app and contact us with privacy requests.

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to Folio’s app, website, and support channels. In this policy, "Folio," "we," "us," and "our" refer to the operator of the Folio reading app and website.

Folio helps readers track books, reading sessions, goals, and progress. Some information is stored on your device, and some information may be synced or processed to provide the services you choose to use.

2. Information We Collect

Information you provide

We collect information you choose to add to Folio, such as books, reading progress, reading sessions, goals, shelves, ratings, reviews, notes, and related library information.

If you contact us, we collect the information you send, such as your name, email address, support topic, device details, app version, and message.

Account, sync, and profile information

If you use sync, sign-in, or public profile features, we may collect information needed to provide those features, such as account identifiers, email address, display name, handle, profile details, public library settings, and synced library information.

Book lookup and third-party services

When you search for books, scan ISBNs, load cover images, or open retailer links, the information needed for that request may be sent to the relevant provider. Those providers process information under their own privacy policies.

Usage and device information

We may collect basic information about how Folio and the website are accessed and used, including device, browser, log, error, performance, and coarse app region information. We use this information to operate, secure, and improve Folio.

3. Product Analytics and Session Replay

Folio uses PostHog for product analytics so we can understand feature usage, app flows, session duration, reliability, and places where the app experience may be confusing or broken. We use this for product quality, not advertising or cross-app tracking.

Analytics events are designed to avoid raw book titles, author names, ISBNs, review text, quote text, notes, email addresses, profile handles, and free-form search or filter text. Search and usage details are sent as bounded values such as event names, screen names, filter types, booleans, and count or length buckets.

Folio may use sampled session replay through PostHog. Replay is configured to sample only a small percentage of sessions and mask text, input fields, and images where supported, so it can help us diagnose user experience issues without being used for advertising.

4. How We Use Information

We use information to:

  • provide and maintain Folio’s app, website, sync, support, and related features;
  • save, display, and restore your reading information where those features are enabled;
  • respond to support requests and troubleshoot reported issues;
  • protect against misuse, fraud, security incidents, and service issues;
  • understand and improve Folio’s performance, reliability, and user experience; and
  • comply with legal obligations and protect Folio, users, and the public.

We do not use your reading data for cross-app advertising, and we do not sell your personal information.

5. How Information Is Shared

We do not sell your personal information. Folio does not make your library public by default. If you choose to use public sharing features, the information shown by those features may be visible to others.

We may share information with:

  • service providers that help us operate, host, support, secure, and improve Folio;
  • PostHog, which helps us understand product analytics and sampled, masked session replay;
  • Apple and other third-party services when you use features that rely on them;
  • book metadata providers, cover image providers, and retailer websites when you request lookups or links;
  • authorities or other parties when required by law or necessary to protect rights, safety, and security; and
  • another organization if Folio is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets.

6. Storage and Retention

We keep personal information for as long as needed to provide Folio, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce our agreements, and protect the service.

Information stored on your device remains there until you delete it, delete the app, or your device removes it. Information synced through Apple services is controlled through your Apple account and device settings.

Support messages, form submissions, logs, backups, and security records may be retained for a reasonable period for support, safety, legal, and operational needs.

7. Your Choices and Controls

  • You can edit or delete reading information in the app.
  • You can use Folio’s data deletion controls in Settings where available.
  • You can manage Apple sync behavior through your Apple account and device settings.
  • You can choose whether to use optional public sharing features.
  • You can contact us to request access, correction, export, or deletion of personal information associated with you.

8. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so please avoid sending sensitive personal information in support messages.

9. Children

Folio is not directed to children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will take appropriate steps to remove it.

10. International Processing

Folio and its service providers may process information in countries other than the one where you live. Those countries may have different data protection laws than your location.

11. Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, portability, restriction, or objection to certain processing of your personal information. You may also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

To make a request, contact us at hello@folio-books.com. We may ask for information needed to verify and complete the request.

12. Updates to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as Folio changes. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date above. If a change is material, we will provide notice in a way that is appropriate for the change.

13. Contact Us

Questions about privacy or data handling can be sent to hello@folio-books.com or through the support page.
